But since you are here and reading this post, one logical assumption to make is that you love your dog, and you are looking at ways to make him more comfortable during periods of travel, ensure his safety, and give him a personal space in which he can retreat during periods of intense stress.

Let’s be honest here, nobody really wants to lock up their best friend in a dog crate. But think about it for a second. Your pup’s local environment was not designed for him. It was made for us. To you and your family, a house is just that, a dwelling you can call home. But for your pup, at least in the first few months of life, it can be a minefield of dangerous items that he doesn’t really have the mental fortitude to avoid.

We love our dogs. They are Australia’s most popular pet and their ownership has risen substantially in the last couple of years. But at least at first, during their puppy period, they are prone to making mistakes with a potential impact on their physical well-being. Do you want to invest in a dog crate or a puppy pen? Maybe not. But it’s the right thing to do.

A Practical and Necessary Accessory

A high-quality dog crate is more than just a place in which your pup can sleep or retreat during periods of stress. No, it can actually be a training tool that will strengthen your relationship with your bud and make it easier to have different experiences together. Around 10% of Aussies always take their pets with them when on holiday. Moreover, around 42% of dog owners declare they like to take their pooch with them whenever possible.

I am part of that 42%. Holidays are more enjoyable when you are accompanied by your best friend and the life of your fluffball is short. So why not make it memorable? But unfortunately, if you want to travel long distances, either by aeroplane or by vehicle transportation, the investment in a top-quality dog crate transforms from a recommendation into a necessity.

Only one airline in our country allows for cabin travel with pets. And even in their case, the routes are limited, the pet should still be confined in a padded crate, and their maximum weight is limited to 8kg. Is your pup bigger than that? If so, you will need to buy a sturdier crate that can be stored in the plane’s cargo compartment. And the same is true if you are travelling by car. Your vehicle was designed for you, and every brake or sharp turn could pose a danger to your dog.

Are Crates Useful Only for Travelling?

No. Far from it, actually. There are a multitude of reasons why crates are a fantastic purchase and only a handful of them are related to travelling.

Keep Your Dog Safe When Unsupervised

Do I want my pup to have a great time when I’m at work, and reduce his boredom whenever possible? Yes. Do I trust leaving him alone for ten minutes without him chewing half my living room? No, I don’t. At least in the first few months of life, puppies are unpredictable and they can start chewing on things they really shouldn’t be in their vicinity.

Realistically, you can’t dog-proof your whole apartment, and it’s not like you can teach your pup to stop chewing on stuff when he’s already teething. Locking him in a crate or puppy pen, for those periods when you are not home, might not sound like an ideal solution. But if that’s the price to reduce the risks of accidents, I personally say it’s worth it.

Simplify Vet Visits

As a dog owner, you will have your fair share of vet visits to worry about. It’s not exactly avoidable, is it? But you must also think of your pup. How anxious does he feel when he needs to get his annual shot, or visit your local veterinary clinic for miscellaneous reasons? A crate-trained dog will generally be less stressed during veterinary visits, and should rest more easily after treatments or injury.

I once helped a friend transport their mountain of a Saint Bernard, after getting anesthetized and spayed. Have you ever tried to fit a sleepy 70kg dog in the backseat of a Mini Cooper? That was enough gym work for a week. A crate would’ve made the whole process much easier for us, and less stressful for Pixel. But of course, we didn’t have a crate at the time, as it would’ve been too convenient.

Why Get a Puppy Pen?

For transportation purposes, when you need to take your pup from point A to point B, a dog crate is still the best choice around. After all, safety is the number one priority. But if you simply need a safe space in which your pup can rest for a couple of hours and play in a confined albeit spacious environment, I will personally choose a puppy pen any day of the week.

A puppy pen can give your dog more room to lunge around without having access to your full house. It can reduce boredom, provide him with a safe place in which to play; it’s a good training tool to reinforce proper potty-training habits, and it’s honestly the best choice around if you want to limit destructive chewing while still allowing some freedom of movement.

A puppy pen is the first thing I purchased after I came home after work and discovered my Toy Poodle, Bubu, managed to chew up my internet cable. For the second time. In two days. The only problem with dog pens? They require a bit more space, and they are not exactly useful for ensuring your pup’s safety during periods of travelling. But if you want to create a designated area for introducing your puppy to a routine, pens are a standout solution.

We might not know much about you and your current personal or financial aspirations.
